Homework Policy
I will be sending home a daily homework sheet listing any homework the students have for the day. There will be a place for any teacher or parent comments on it, and a place for your signature. Please have your child return this sheet with his/her homework. The second graders are expected to begin using a planner this year to write in their homework, but I won't be starting this with them until January. Also, I will still continue to send home a homework sheet along with the planner just to be on the safe side. Probably toward the end of April or the beginning of May, the students will be using only the planners for homework assignments. This will help to get them ready for third grade.
Weekly homework will consist of studying spelling words and reading the current story. Daily homework will usually be short review worksheets in Math and/or Language Arts. The students will have a grace day to turn in forgotten homework. After that, they may have to complete it during recess time. Fridays are "homework-free" days!
Discipline Policy
The behavior plan this year is the same as last year's. We will follow the Marvin Marshall action plan.
Warm Fuzzies
I will have a container on my desk for "Warm Fuzzies." Any time the class does something noteworthy or gets complimented as a group from someone, a warm fuzzy (pom-pom) will be placed in the container. When the class has earned ten warm fuzzies, the students will receive some kind of reward ( a game period, watching a short video, a lollipop, etc)
Super Star Student
Beginning in September, a student will be chosen every 3 weeks to be the Super Star Student. Since all students are stars in my eyes, this will not be based on any special achievement. I will have craft sticks with the students' names on them and will choose randomly. Every student will be featured at some point during the year.
When a child is chosen (a name stick will be picked on the last Thursday of the month), I will send home a questionnaire with them the next day to be completed by the following week. Examples of questions include family members, pets, favorite food, favorite book, and so on. I will put this information on word strips to be displayed on the "Super Star Student" board. Students may also bring in photos, drawings, or anything else they want displayed. The star student will "present" his/her board the week after (the second week of the month) and answer any questions from fellow classmates (limit of five questions).
Scholastic Book Orders
I will be sending home book orders each month. Feel free to place your order online(I will put our class code on the order form), or feel free to send the order into the school. Checks are payable to Scholastic Book Clubs.
I know that this is a great deal of information all at one time, so if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
